 Gas prices. It seems like that’s all some people can talk about. You turn on the news, and you hear about gas prices. You pick up the paper, and you read about gas prices.

Frankly, I’m tired of hearing about it. Does the constant rise in gas prices affect me? Of course. Am I aggravated that it takes more money to feed my car than it does to feed my family? Absolutely.

But, how does complaining about it help any of us? How does it help to keep such a negative topic in the forefront of our minds day after day? It doesn’t help us at all. In fact, it hinders us from focusing on more important things, like spiritual fuel.

I don’t know a lot about cars, but I do know that they must have gas before they will run. No fuel, no go!

Our bodies work in the same way. God created us in such a way that our bodies need nourishment from food in order to work properly.

So, acknowledging what we know about our physical bodies needing fuel, why should we think our spiritual bodies are any different? Why do we often deprive our faith of the fuel it needs to grow and thrive?

In Philippians 3, Paul said, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended.” In other words, he’s saying, “I’ve not arrived. I still have a lot of work to do on my faith.”

I think we can all say “Amen” to Paul’s statement. I believe we can agree that we have not reached the level of spiritual maturity that we long for. We possess the faith, but are we fueling that faith?

The Bible compares the Christian walk with a race. So, let me ask you this question: how often are you making pit stops? I don’t watch much auto racing, but more than once, I’ve seen a driver lose the race because his car ran out of gas. You can almost hear the conversation he has with himself as he passes that last pit stop. “I can make it a little father. I have enough fuel to finish. If I just keep going, I’ll win this thing.”

Good thought. Bad plan. By not giving his car what it needed, he cost himself the race. Not only did he not win, but he didn’t even get to finish the race.

Aren’t we like that sometimes, too? So busy with our daily demands and weekly routines, we bypass our spiritual fuel. We know we need to read the Bible, but it’s often just too difficult to fit in into our schedule. Our daily time with the Lord is interrupted by phone calls, sick children, or job emergencies.

Day after day, we struggle through, forsaking our spiritual fuel, then wondering why life is so difficult and why we can’t seem to gain any ground in our spiritual walk.

God has shown me time and time again that if I will devote the time to fueling my spiritual man, He will give me the time and energy to accomplish everything else on my “to do” list.

They become more like characters acting in a play than real people engaged in real life. In order to have any hope of enjoying true spiritual healing and development, a person must peel away these false personas and be sincere and forthright beings.

The fourth way that honesty plays a role in the spiritual journey is through the use of meditation techniques. When a person begins a session of meditation, they should be aware their flow of thoughts.

For most people who are just learning to master their minds through meditation, they will discover thoughts that are filled with false reasoning and justifications. The best way to begin to control this flow of thoughts is to deal with them in an honest and forthright manner, then setting them aside and allowing the more centered and real thoughts to come to the surface.

 Did you watch the show “Short Circuit?” It was about a robot created for the military to seek and destroy. Something happened to the robot; some circuits shorted out and it became aware of its existence; it became sentient. The robot which was the 5th robot is a series, gave itself a name and declared throughout the movie that “Number Five is Alive.”

To discover that one is alive and to know it, is a unique feeling. It happens to us almost every day. Someone walks bye you and says Hi (Roy) and you feel something. You feel life; it is an indescribable feeling. Another walks bye and says “Roy I read your book;” it is recognition of being alive. They don’t have to say whether they liked the book or not, just that they recognized you. They are saying Roy, “I recognize that you are alive” and any comment that may follow is of less importance.

You’re in a crowd and someone yells out your name; your heart beats faster and you are filled with anticipation or trepidation. Someone may have recognized you and your spirit once again is reminded that it is connected to another part of itself. Life longs to be recognized. It is like the left arm searching for the right so that it may join again as one.

There is a wonderful story in the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books; it’s called “A simple Gesture” and you can find it in the first book of the series. It is a story of how a small gesture of recognition that saved the life of a young school boy who was on his way home to kill himself.

A simple look or glance at someone can send a message of recognition to another and the message will be received; “you are alive and not alone,” it is the handshake, the pat one the shoulder, the wink of recognition that stirs the spirit and reminds it of its journey.

Have you even stood with friends and they are busy talking to each other and they have left you out of their conversation? They gaze right through you as though you were not even there. Have you ever stood in a line and someone butts in front of you, and they may sorry, I didn’t see you after you said something to them. How does it feel when you are there and no one sees you or hears you?

To ignore someone is the most hurtful thing you can do to anyone; your friend or enemy. It es them off and it hurts; it cuts right through to the spirit. Life cannot be ignored and will always find a way to be recognized; many times in almost equally hurtful ways.

This sadly enough happens in many long term relationships. Partners are so used to having each other around that they forget the other one is alive. It is a killer, and a very cruel and hurtful way of being buried alive. Many people will stay in abusive relationships just for the sake of being recognized as alive, no matter how bad the relationship is; at least the abusive partner knows the other one is alive.

This may sound sick to an unenlightened mind; however, it is what life wants. That is why you are here in this physical life. You are here to experience all aspects of a live being and experiencing everything physical. Because in truth there is only one life, not the individualized lives your ego knows; life tries to find itself in all its experiences. Everything is life, whether you call it animate, inanimate, and sentient or not; you will find life in all things. Life cannot deny itself. So when life meets itself it begins to know itself as one thing or the other.

“I AM” is life itself, anything that comes after that is the experience of life. Women often complain about their spouses not recognizing them. Many women have said that there is one thing they long to hear the most; it is the sound of their name. All the endearments or titles they have directed towards them every day cannot compare to the sound of someone calling their name. “I AM” is like that also. Its only desire is to look at you and recognize itself as looking back at itself. I am here and I am there. There is only me and you and we are the same life. Like being in a foreign land, and after an extended period of time, you would love for someone from home to come into your life and say your name. It’s extraordinary that even someone you don’t particularly like, will all of a sudden become a friend in a foreign place, and it is only because he has reaffirmed your existence and at a very basic and meaningful level of your being - your spirit.

As far fetched as this may sound, it has been the experience of most people. Next time someone says hello to you, waves to you, smiles or taps you on the shoulder, get in touch with your feelings for a second. Try and recognize what you are feeling in the moment; you will with practice be able to identify with the hidden message - “I am alive.”

Some may say, well, I know I am alive, I can see myself, I can feel my body or I am in extreme pain, and people are trying to kill me or they are making demands of me; I am very much here and alive - I don’t need anyone to tell me I’m alive.

That is a different kind of recognition and it is superficial and ego oriented; it is the results of, or experience of being alive. What you are feeling in the slit second that you are recognized, is your connection to all things and the God or creator that you wish to know. You are once again reaffirmed of your omnipotence and immortality as a spiritual being - being human.

When life recognizes life, it creates joyfulness in the awareness of the ego that is expressed physically. From the greater perspective when you can see that both hands are working together to create what you want, there is less urgency and doubt about your life’s purpose. Life is no longer a struggle. It does not excuse you from participating in your life cycle; it just makes it easier, and the fear that you have known throughout your life disappears.

“I am alive and well” no matter what your present circumstances empowers you to change your circumstances. If you are alive and well in Rome, you can change your experience of Rome. If you are alive and well in a relationship, you are empowered to change the experience of that relationship. Acknowledgement of being life in the physical experience empowers you to use all aspects of what life has to offer. You are not what you think you are; you are life itself experiencing what you think you are.

I Am Alive And Well

 Did you watch the show “Short Circuit?” It was about a robot created for the military to seek and destroy. Something happened to the robot; some circuits shorted out and it became aware of its existence; it became sentient. The robot which was the 5th robot is a series, gave itself a name and declared throughout the movie that “Number Five is Alive.”

To discover that one is alive and to know it, is a unique feeling. It happens to us almost every day. Someone walks bye you and says Hi (Roy) and you feel something. You feel life; it is an indescribable feeling. Another walks bye and says “Roy I read your book;” it is recognition of being alive. They don’t have to say whether they liked the book or not, just that they recognized you. They are saying Roy, “I recognize that you are alive” and any comment that may follow is of less importance.

You’re in a crowd and someone yells out your name; your heart beats faster and you are filled with anticipation or trepidation. Someone may have recognized you and your spirit once again is reminded that it is connected to another part of itself. Life longs to be recognized. It is like the left arm searching for the right so that it may join again as one.

To ignore someone is the most hurtful thing you can do to anyone; your friend or enemy. It es them off and it hurts; it cuts right through to the spirit. Life cannot be ignored and will always find a way to be recognized; many times in almost equally hurtful ways.

This sadly enough happens in many long term relationships. Partners are so used to having each other around that they forget the other one is alive. It is a killer, and a very cruel and hurtful way of being buried alive. Many people will stay in abusive relationships just for the sake of being recognized as alive, no matter how bad the relationship is; at least the abusive partner knows the other one is alive.

This may sound sick to an unenlightened mind; however, it is what life wants. That is why you are here in this physical life. You are here to experience all aspects of a live being and experiencing everything physical. Because in truth there is only one life, not the individualized lives your ego knows; life tries to find itself in all its experiences. Everything is life, whether you call it animate, inanimate, and sentient or not; you will find life in all things. Life cannot deny itself. So when life meets itself it begins to know itself as one thing or the other.

“I AM” is life itself, anything that comes after that is the experience of life. Women often complain about their spouses not recognizing them. Many women have said that there is one thing they long to hear the most; it is the sound of their name. All the endearments or titles they have directed towards them every day cannot compare to the sound of someone calling their name. “I AM” is like that also. Its only desire is to look at you and recognize itself as looking back at itself. I am here and I am there. There is only me and you and we are the same life. Like being in a foreign land, and after an extended period of time, you would love for someone from home to come into your life and say your name. It’s extraordinary that even someone you don’t particularly like, will all of a sudden become a friend in a foreign place, and it is only because he has reaffirmed your existence and at a very basic and meaningful level of your being - your spirit.

As far fetched as this may sound, it has been the experience of most people. Next time someone says hello to you, waves to you, smiles or taps you on the shoulder, get in touch with your feelings for a second. Try and recognize what you are feeling in the moment; you will with practice be able to identify with the hidden message - “I am alive.”

Some may say, well, I know I am alive, I can see myself, I can feel my body or I am in extreme pain, and people are trying to kill me or they are making demands of me; I am very much here and alive - I don’t need anyone to tell me I’m alive.

That is a different kind of recognition and it is superficial and ego oriented; it is the results of, or experience of being alive. What you are feeling in the slit second that you are recognized, is your connection to all things and the God or creator that you wish to know. You are once again reaffirmed of your omnipotence and immortality as a spiritual being - being human.

When life recognizes life, it creates joyfulness in the awareness of the ego that is expressed physically. From the greater perspective when you can see that both hands are working together to create what you want, there is less urgency and doubt about your life’s purpose. Life is no longer a struggle. It does not excuse you from participating in your life cycle; it just makes it easier, and the fear that you have known throughout your life disappears.

“I am alive and well” no matter what your present circumstances empowers you to change your circumstances. If you are alive and well in Rome, you can change your experience of Rome. If you are alive and well in a relationship, you are empowered to change the experience of that relationship. Acknowledgement of being life in the physical experience empowers you to use all aspects of what life has to offer. You are not what you think you are; you are life itself experiencing what you think you are.

One of these fundamentals that can either help or hinder spiritual development is complete honesty.

Everyone knows that honesty is a good and valuable characteristic to cultivate, but it is not as often recognized as a necessity when seeking out spiritual growth. However, as most people move along through their spiritual journey, most people start to really discover the significance and importance of honesty as it relates to their quest. There are four primary areas where honesty comes into play most significantly.

The first area is in facing your weaknesses. In order to enjoy significant spiritual growth, a person must be able to honestly see, acknowledge and evaluate his weaknesses. No one is exempt from have having shortcomings, but they can interfere with spiritual development if the person tries to justify them away or refuses to see them. Only when a person is honest with him or herself will they begin to change.

Secondly, honesty is needed in facing up to the realities of your life. You need to be completely honest about the state of affairs of every aspect of your life. Stop clinging to the image that you want to present to the rest of the world, and begin to embrace the true state of your life and your relationships.

The problem with clinging to the image, which is most likely “perfect,” is that it gets in the way of being able to make real, lasting and significant changes that can lead to real happiness, rather than just an illusion of it. With honesty, one can look at the real truth and then have a realistic place to begin to improve.

Thirdly, honesty is needed to help people eliminate fake personalities, which must be eschewed in order to enjoy true spiritual enlightenment and growth. Most people put an enormous amount of energy, thought, and anxiety into creating and then maintaining completely false portrayals of themselves.

They become more like characters acting in a play than real people engaged in real life. In order to have any hope of enjoying true spiritual healing and development, a person must peel away these false personas and be sincere and forthright beings.

The fourth way that honesty plays a role in the spiritual journey is through the use of meditation techniques. When a person begins a session of meditation, they should be aware their flow of thoughts.

For most people who are just learning to master their minds through meditation, they will discover thoughts that are filled with false reasoning and justifications. The best way to begin to control this flow of thoughts is to deal with them in an honest and forthright manner, then setting them aside and allowing the more centered and real thoughts to come to the surface.

As you continue on your path of spiritual growth and development it will be helpful to always keep these for aspects of honesty in mind and review your progress with them. As you do, you will enjoy moving to higher levels and stages of spiritual development, which will lead you toward your true spiritual life.

What if you get married, what sort of ceremony would you have? How would you raise children? How would you spend the holidays?

Some people feel very strongly about this, and there is nothing wrong with it. But, before you have a knee jerk reaction you should really stop and think about the possibilities in front of you. You may find that you are more accepting of someone with a different religion than you may have ever thought you would be.

Dating someone of a different religion doesn’t have to be a negative thing, even if you are a very spiritual person. Instead, this can be something that helps you grow as a person and become even stronger in your faith. You can learn more about their religion and what they believe and you can teach them about yours. You may find that you had a lot of misconceptions about their religion and you will be expanding your mind as well as opening your heart to something new. You don’t have to take on their religion, but you can both share with one another.

Through this sharing process you may find that your religions have a lot of things in common. You may find that you are both able to keep practicing your faith without impeding the others beliefs. This can be a growing experience for the both of you, and many people have been able to build successful relationships despite differences in their religious beliefs.

If you get married you can make compromises, if you have kids you can teach them both religions, and on holidays you can each incorporate both of your beliefs.
